How to Prevent Hail Damage on a Roof
- 1). Research the effectiveness of various types of roofing materials for preventing hail damage. Asphalt shingles, for example, are more preventative when they are reinforced. Modified asphalt is even more effective at preventing hail damage. Metal can dent easily but the damage from hail is likely to be minimal. Slate roofs are durable, heavy and can last 100 years or more.
- 2). Install a roofing material that is impact-resistant. This type of roofing material is less likely to be damaged by hail.
- 3). Look for the UL 2218 standard on the roofing material you choose. This standard means that the material passed testing by the Underwriters Laboratory that involved susceptibility to damage, such as hail damage.
