How to Measure Window Width

1). Take off the window screen and open the window. This allows you to measure between the window jambs.
2). Use a measuring tape to determine the width by holding the metal tab against one jamb and stretching it across the opening to the other jamb. Measure at three points -- the bottom, middle, and top of the window. This accounts for any warping or inconsistency in the jamb surrounding the window, regardless of the material used to build the window.
3). Ordering new windows also requires measuring the height of the window. Place the tab of the tape measure on the bottom lip of the head of the window. Since the window sill slopes, measure to the highest point of the sill. Take three measurements, the left, middle and right.
4). Compare the measurements. If they are different, use the lowest figure for both the width and height. Subtract 1/4 inch from each measurement, and order your new window.
