Compare Metal Roofing
- 1). Research the two main materials that metal roofs are generally made from: steel and aluminum. The prices and installation can vary for these two metals. Aluminum tends to be lighter and therefore easier to install. However, steel can be better at disguising dents.
- 2). Check out other roofing material options. If you don't want to use steel or aluminum roofing materials, you can also use copper or alloy strips. Be aware that strips can highlight seams, and copper can change color.
- 3). Find out what to look for in each type of roofing material. Steel needs to have a coating to prevent corrosion and rust. A stainless steel roof, while more expensive, does not require this coating. Aluminum is rust-resistant but is unattractive without a coating or paint. Copper is naturally rust-resistant and doesn't need to be coated or painted; the drawback is that it's the most expensive roofing option. Alloys are also expensive and must be very well made to prevent a fake or commercialized look.
- 4). Understand the pricing of metal roofs and find something that fits your budget. Roofing materials are measured by square, which actually means 100 square feet of material. A single square may be as little as $150 or as much as $600 or more.
- 5). Look around for a metal-roofing contractor. Choosing the contractor is just as important as choosing the roof itself. Find out the installation process and cost for several contractors so you can compare them adequately.
