How to Use Paint on an Old Caterpillar D6 Bulldozer
- 1). Put on a pair of rubber gloves and protective eye goggles. Locate all rusted metal and peeled paint spots on the bulldozer's body. Use a wire brush to loosen the rust spots, and remove the peeling paint.
- 2). Sand the entire surface of the bulldozer with heavy-grade (600-grit) industrial sandpaper until the surface is smooth. Avoid sanding bare metal spots on the bulldozer.
- 3). Apply some trisodium phosphate (TSP) to a wash cloth. Wipe down the body's surface of any oil or grease.
- 4). Prep the bulldozer for painting. Cover the windshield with masking paper, and the mirrors, handles and headlights with masking tape. Wipe down all residue from the bulldozer's surface with paint thinner.
- 5). Apply a coat of rust-resistant primer, using a paint sprayer. Check the paint manufacturer's label for specific instructions for dry times. Let the coat dry, apply a second coat and let the primer dry. Add some paint thinner to the paint sprayer to clean it out. Repeat this process to apply two coats of rust-resistant paint to the bulldozer.
