Hormonal acne treatments are of great interest for people that suffer from acne due in large part to the hormones called androgens acting up in both teenagers and in some cases adults.
The skin disease occurs when the androgens increase the production of excess oil which then leads to the skin pores becoming clogged and a proliferation of pimples and zits.
The previous paragraph explained this skin blemish in simple terms so that anyone can understand hormonal acne but the fact is in most women acne is not caused by oily skin.
Instead their situation may be due to an underlying cause which is based upon a hormonal imbalance taking place internally.
There are various oral medications that have been formulated to treat and cure adult hormonal acne and these hormone balance achieving medications are usually placed into three categories: Oral contraceptives, ant-inflammatory products (commonly called oral corticosteroids) and anti-androgens.
Oral Contraceptives Oral contraceptives work by at alleviating hormonal acne symptoms using progestin and estrogen to replace the androgens causing the body to produce less oil.
With any form of a drug there are always regulatory guidelines that need to be followed.
Fortunately, the FDA allows low dosages of contraceptive pills to be used as a form of treatment for severe acne and skin blemishes.
This is a fantastic treatment for women wanting to remain acne free and not ready to have a baby.
Oral Corticosteroids The oral corticosteroids are usually prescribed by dermatologist to combat unregulated androgen production.
When used properly to control acne breakouts these anti-inflammatories (Prednisone and Dexamethasone) work exceptionally well at preventing acne inflammations.
Anti-Androgens For total control of the body's production of androgen in order to reduce oily skin and the formation of acne most people decide on using anti-androgens.
Although there are several different kinds of medications, the most popular in this category include flutamide and spironalactone.
No matter which adult hormonal acne treatment solutions or products you choose to use always remember that there will be some adverse side effects.
Oral corticosteroids have been known to cause thinning of the body's bones and an increase in body weight.
Some anti-androgen drugs cause nausea, menstrual spotting and irregular menstrual periods in women.
