How to Repair a Lawn Mower Rope
- 1). Locate the bolts or screws that are used to secure the starter pulley housing. Remove any bolts with the socket wrench and any screws with the screwdriver.
- 2). Lift the housing off of the mower and locate the starter pulley. This can be attached to the mower shaft or attached to the underside of the housing.
- 3). Cut the old starter cord or rope off of the starter pulley with the utility knife.
- 4). Open the new package for starter cord and measure out about 8 or 9 feet or cord. Use a tape measure to find the length of the cord. Cut the cord at the needed length with the utility knife.
- 5). Heat up the cut end of the cord with the lighter to remove the frayed ends. Alternatively, you can wrap the end of the cord with electrical tape.
- 6). Thread the end of the starter cord into the starter pulley and tie a knot at the end. The knot will keep the cord from coming out of the pulley.
- 7). Loop the starter cord around the starter pulley one or two times. Insert the other end of the cord through the hole in the pulley.
- 8). Set the housing back on the mower and secure it with the bolts or screws.
- 9). Pull the starter cord to make sure that it will recoil back around the starter pulley.
