Carol Higgins Clark does it again! A magnificent thriller which begins with two elderly people Ben and Nat deciding to donate the four diamonds they own since past so many years to the club they love the most, settler's Club.
The same night both of them are dead! Ben dies of a heart attack and falls in front of a bus while Nat is found dead in his bath.
There is nothing to show that either of these is a murder except for a missing red velvet box which contains the four diamonds, which no one other than the club president has ever seen.
Regan Reilly is in town for her mother's convention and is called upon to investigate the case by the club president, Thomas.
As Regan starts her investigation she realizes there was a singles party going on across the hall in Lydia's apartment, where Maldwin, the butler, also runs a butler school.
Regan decides to stay in Nat's apartment while she is investigating the case, but she wakes up in the middle of the night to find that someone has broken into the house and is searching for something frantically, scaring the life out of Regan.
Other major characters in the story are two stuffed sheep, which are beloved to Nat and his wife, like their own children.
And then there is Janey, the simple sweet girlfriend of Thomas, who cooks and delivers food at people's home for a living.
She gets herself involved in the entire crime when she goes back to Ben's house to take back the food she had delivered the previous day for Ben, which he never got to eat as he died the same night.
Each and every character is distinctly etched out and fits into day-to-day characters we all meet in our lives, but the beauty of the story is that not a single character is above suspicion at any point in time.
As you read till the last page you are unsure about who would have pushed Nat in his bath and murdered him, with no clue given throughout the story, you are left wondering till the very last page of this page-turner.
The story is beautifully narrated and once you start the novel, you are sure to find it difficult to put down.
It's the kind of story which is full of twists and turns, things going wrong, lot of humor in witty scenes in the thriller and it never loses its charm.
All and all an absorbing story, just the way every Regan Reilly thriller is!
