How to Refinish a Rustoleum Countertop
- 1). Clean the countertop thoroughly by scrubbing it with dish soap. Rinse away all of the soap or you may have trouble with paint adhesion.
- 2). Abrade the surface of the Rustoleum countertop to encourage paint adhesion by sanding it with 80- to 120-grit sandpaper. Do not over-sand. Stop sanding when the surface feels slightly rough to the touch.
- 3). Wipe down the Rustoleum countertop with a tack cloth, effectively removing dust created during the sanding process.
- 4). Protect areas you don't want painted by covering them with blue painter's tape.
- 5). Fill the 2-gallon painter's pot half-way with Rustoleum countertop paint. Stir in 1 ounce of water to dilute the paint to help encourage a smoother-looking finish free of unattractive brush strokes.
- 6). Apply a thin coat of the paint to the Rustoleum countertop using a 4-inch latex paintbrush. Do not over-apply as this will lead to brush strokes in the final finish.
- 7). Allow the surface to dry for two hours. Then apply additional coats until the Rustoleum countertop is completely covered.
