Instructions for Reverse Single Crochet

Setting Up for the Stitch

The reverse single crochet can be used as a border on any crochet or knit piece, but it works best when used over an even surface. Review the outside edges of the object to determine where to make the stitches.

Performing the Stitch

To perform the reverse single crochet stitch, the yarn should be at the far left end of the piece. Insert the hook into the next stitch or space to the right just as it would be inserted into a stitch for a regular single crochet. Yarn over and bring the hook back through the stitch. The loop from the yarn over should be closer to the hook and the original loop should be closer to the fingers. Yarn over and draw the hook through both loops on the hook.

After doing the first stitch, it does not appear very rounded. However, as subsequent stitches are made, the rounded appearance will begin to show.

Finishing Off Reverse Crochet

Finishing off a single crochet border depends on what type of object is being bordered. If it is one row of single crochet, the best way to finish off is to make a slip stitch into the same stitch as the last reverse single crochet, then cut the yarn and draw through.

If the piece is crocheted in the round, the best way to fasten off is to make a slip stitch into the first reverse single crochet made, cut the yarn and draw through. Make sure the slip stitch is made on the inside of the work, as it can create a small bump that may mar the appearance of that side of the border.

Reverse single crochet makes weaving in the ends simple, as the stitch is essentially a tube that the yarn can be drawn through. Insert the needle into the nearest stitch and pull through a length of the border. For extra security, double back through the tube once or twice.
