    • 1). Contact your private health insurance provider (if applicable) and ask whether grandchildren can be added to your policy. Note any necessary conditions, such as legal guardianship.

    • 2). Use the Internet or phone to contact your state's Medicaid program if you are not able to add your grandchildren to your private insurance policy. Determine whether your grandchildren are eligible for Medicaid.

    • 3). Use the Internet or phone to contact your SCHIP program if your grandchildren do not qualify for Medicaid. Read the requirements and apply if it appears that your grandchildren are eligible.

    • 4). Contact your local Area Agency on Aging's Family Caregiver Support Program if all else fails. You are eligible if you are 55 or older and your grandchild lives with you. You may find out about other resources that are not available online.
