How to Carve Watermelon Cradles
- 1). Place the watermelon on a flat working surface so that it is laid on its long length. Measure half way down from the top of the watermelon and make a mark. Draw a line with an erasable marker all the way around the watermelon at the half way mark.
- 2). Insert a large, sharp knife along the half way line and cut the watermelon into two long pieces. Set one piece aside for later.
- 3). Scoop out all of the fruit from the remaining piece with a melon baller, and put the fruit into a mixing bowl.
- 4). Cut off 1/4 of the length of the other half of watermelon. Empty the fruit from the 1/4 section with the melon baller.
- 5). Insert toothpicks into the bottom of the quarter length of watermelon. Press this piece back onto the watermelon to insert the other end of the toothpicks to join the two pieces together. This makes the hood of the cradle.
- 6). Trace a wavy line across the cut edges of the watermelon, and cut out the waves with a paring knife to make a decorative edge for the cradle.
- 7). Add a fruit baby to the watermelon cradle. Place an orange into the watermelon cradle underneath the hood of the cradle. This is the head of the baby. Cut a small hole into the orange, approximately where a mouth would be and insert the end of a pacifier into the hole. Fill the remainder of the watermelon with fruit to cover the baby with a blanket of mixed fruits.
