How to Paint Amaryllis Flowers
- 1). Lightly sketch an Amaryllis flower onto your canvas. Use a photograph of an Amaryllis flower, or work from a live flower to create the image. Add faint lines within the sketch that follow the natural direction of the flower's petals and leaves. You will use these lines as a guide for your brush strokes.
- 2). Paint the dark values onto the inside of the flower using dark green paint mixed with a little black. Start by adding a small amount of this mixture to the center of each petal and fade the paint as it moves outward. Apply your brush strokes in the natural direction of the flower's petal, taking care to follow your directional lines.
- 3). Cover the rest of each petal in white and gently blend the dark value into the white to lay a tonal base on the whole flower. Allow the white to mix with a bit of green even in the lightest areas. Although white flowers may seem white, they all contain a bit of green.
- 4). Mix crimson paint with a bit of dark green. Use a thin edging brush to apply this color to the tips of each petal. Be careful not to outline the entire petal. Focus the color mostly on the center tips. Blend this color slightly downward into the base of the flower.
- 5). Use pure white to add highlights to the center of each petal. These areas reflect the most light. Notice on your photo or live Amaryllis flower where and how these highlights lie.
- 6). Paint the darkest areas of the leaves with dark green paint and the rest of the leaves with a light green mixture. Add white to the highlighted areas as you did for each petal.
- 7). Paint the stamens (center stems of the flower) using yellow, white and a bit of brown. Highlight the stamens with white and blend as you did for each petal.
