Problems With Norton Virus Scan

    Significance

    • Computer security is always a concern on any computer, whether you have an antivirus program or not. Your computer is just always a tad safer when you have an antivirus program such as Norton Antivirus. If your Norton Antivirus program is running into virus scan problems, your computer becomes vulnerable to attacks that have the ability to severely damage system components. To keep your computer functioning properly, troubleshooting Norton virus scanning problems is essential.

    Compatibility Issues

    • Downloading and installing Norton Antivirus on a computer that is not equipped with the right hardware to handle it will cause problems during virus scans and deter system performance. Norton Antivirus programs, like many others, use large amounts of system resources and, therefore, require certain amounts of RAM and processor speed to run effectively. If your computer, for example, has only 512MB of RAM and the minimum requirement is 1GB of RAM, be prepared for decreased productivity of your antivirus program.

    Other Antivirus Programs

    • Most security programs, including Norton Antivirus, are stand-alone programs, meaning it is not advisable to install more than one antivirus program on your computer. The presence of Norton together with another antivirus program causes conflicts that can result in an unprotected computer. Scanning becomes slower or runs into problems when scanning certain sectors. Although it may appear that another antivirus program other than Norton will make your computer more secure, it creates more harm than good.

    Network Connections

    • Norton Antivirus, like other antivirus programs, requires a running network connection to perform optimally and remove malicious files after scanning. Internet connection is mostly required by the updating service (Live Update), which automatically connects to the Internet upon computer start-up and checks the Norton website for any virus or spyware updates. If Norton is not able to update itself, newly downloaded malicious files cannot be detected, which eventually causes problems for your computer system.

    Solutions

    • Always check your network connection and make sure that it is functioning properly. While Internet connection types vary depending on the service you have, it's always important to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for troubleshooting guidelines if your network is disabled. Uninstall third-party security programs that cause errors and leave Norton as your stand-alone security program. If you are still running into problems with Norton, uninstall and reinstall it again to reset it.
