Writing narrative poetry is exciting.
A good way to begin is by choosing qualities associated with short stories and novels.
Plot, character, setting and description are four key story writing techniques.
This article is about understanding and using them to write narrative poetry.
Plot and Poetry A plot is a series of events.
Each event moves the story along to its final conclusion.
Conflict occurs within certain events.
When conflict is at the heart of any action powerful prose emerges.
This is how plot promotes action at its best in stories, novels and narrative poetry.
Conflict also occurs within people.
Character and Poetry Characters are real or imagined people.
The writer presents them within the plot.
If the story has a main character, this person is known as the protagonist.
The story unfolds by having the protagonist experience conflict.
For powerful writing, the main character within the story, novel or poem is at the heart of the conflict, throughout the written piece.
Characters are also written in specific settings.
Setting and Poetry Settings are within real or imaginative worlds.
Using setting the short story writer or novelist like the poet gets to create a vivid picture.
The writer and poet are only limited by their own imaginations.
Describing settings means letting the plot unfold and each character develop.
Descriptions also do a lot more.
Poetry and Description Descriptions are powerful.
They are where the writer and poet get to use their imaginations to form real or made-up worlds.
Descriptions also set the mood of the poem.
For instance, describing a beautiful landscape setting is far different from describing the inner turmoil or grief of an individual character.
The Makings of a Narrative Poem With these novel and short story techniques at the poet's disposal it is important to keep in mind the framework within which the poetry develops.
The question becomes one of how does the poet use these techniques to produce narrative poetry? Having looked at these techniques and considered what is the same about them throughout short stories, novels and poetry, it also important to look at their distinctive uses.
Remembering that poems are about an economical use of words will keep the poet on the right track.
All good stories are known to have a beginning middle and end.
However, there is nothing to stop the poet writing from the middle.
It's narrative poetry at its best.
