There is often no single cause for acne breakouts in most people, genetics, diet and hormones can all play a role.
In fact, many people do not realize that hormones can be held responsible for acne problems in some cases.
Hormones play a large part in overall regulation of our bodies, they play major roles in our overall health and for some people hormones may be the sole cause of their acne problems.
What hormones are related to Acne? Generally Androgens which are male sex hormones play a role in hormone based acne.
These hormones are found in both men and women and may fluctuate and become unbalanced at several points in our lives.
Women are more susceptible to hormone based acne during times such as, puberty, pregnancy and menopause; however it can strike at any time.
For men, puberty onwards can be a hormonal battle field.
For the most part, because women experience larger fluctuations in androgens they can be more susceptible to hormone based acne.
Why do hormones cause acne? An increase in the production of androgens can lead to an increase in oil production.
This in turn contributes to clogged pores and hair follicle which is instrumental in the acne cycle.
What can be done about hormonal acne? For males it is a little more difficult to treat hormonal onset of acne which is triggered by androgens.
For females it may however be possible to use the female contraceptive pill to help balance out hormones and reduce acne.
This is extremely useful during puberty, but won't be an option during adult acne if a there is a desire to fall pregnant.
Like other causes of acne there is no single cure for hormone based acne.
In most cases, it can be more difficult to cure than other types of acne and it is definitely recommended to seek professional advice to confirm that hormones are a problem and work with a medical practitioner at achieving a solution such as medications.
