Types of Garage Floor Finishes

    Paint

    • Paint is an option for garages that adds color and style to the flooring. Paint may be oil, latex or acrylic based and is applied to the floor with rollers. You should plan to use several coats of paint to provide adequate coverage for a raw concrete floor in the garage because the porous material can absorb the paint as you apply it. In garages that house a car, paint can cause problems. The hot rubber of car tires can remove the paint from the floor over time. In addition, solvents and fluids from the vehicle can destroy the finish of the painted garage floor.

    Epoxy

    • Epoxy coatings offer a more durable finish than traditional paint. Epoxy is resistant to stains and spills that can occur in the garage. Water beads up on an epoxy-coated floor for a quick cleanup of any spills. Kits for garage floors can include additives that make the epoxy floor less slippery when it becomes wet. You can choose decorative additives for the floor, such as color chips to create an attractive floor for a garage used as a living space.

    Concrete Stain

    • Concrete staining uses a chemical process to add color and texture to the existing concrete floor. Staining is a durable finish for the garage floor, but it will not hide flaws or defects in the concrete. You can eliminate flaws in the concrete before staining by applying a thin coat of concrete to the floor first. Staining enhances the appearance of cracks and defects in the concrete, which can create a rustic or aged appearance for the floor.

    Overlays and Micro-toppings

    • Overlays are a topping for a concrete garage floor that can be colored, stamped or stenciled for a design worthy of a home interior, which is a good choice for a garage transformed into a living space. To stencil a concrete floor, you attach a stencil to the concrete flooring before applying stain. You can use multiple colors when designing a floor with concrete stencils. Micro-toppings are thin coats of material applied to the concrete surface. You can stamp the material to add texture and design to the concrete floor, which can create the appearance of natural stone or brick.
