How to Prove If an Individual Filed an Income Tax Return
- 1). Obtain a copy of Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return. You can print a copy of the form from the IRS website.
- 2). Enter the individual's information in the top section of the Form 4506-T in lines 1a through 4. You will need the individual's name, spouse's name (if a joint return), Social Security number (of both the individual and spouse, if a joint return), current mailing address and previous address, if the current address is different from the filing address on the individual's last return.
- 3). Enter your name, address and telephone number in Line 5 of Form 4506-T as the third party requesting the information. That way, the information will be mailed directly to you from the IRS, eliminating the risk of fake documents.
- 4). Select which type of transcript you wish to receive in Lines 6 through 8.
- 5). Enter the years for which you wish to receive a transcript in Line 9.
- 6). Have the individual sign and date the Form 4506-T, giving the IRS permission to send you the tax transcripts.
