How to Build a Carnival Wheel

    • 1). Place the plywood board on a flat surface.

    • 2). Use the pencil to trace a circle with a 2- to 4-foot diameter on the plywood board. Cut the circle from the board with a band saw.

    • 3). Find the center of the circular plywood board and mark the spot with a pencil.

    • 4). Draw 12 pie-slice-shaped sections on the plywood board starting from the center. The pie shapes should be equally sized.

    • 5). Paint the pie-slice shapes, using various colors. Match the carnival's theme colors for a sleek look. Allow enough time for the paint to set until it is dry to the touch.

    • 6). Glue wooden dowels with wood glue on the lines between two adjacent sections of the board. The dowels should be positioned close to the outer edge of the board.

    • 7). Cut an arrow shape out of the plastic piece. The length of the arrow should be the length of the radius of the wheel. The radius can be determined by dividing the diameter of the wheel by two. Cut a hole slightly smaller than the size of the lag bolt in the end of the arrow opposite to the arrowhead.

    • 8). Drill a hole in the center of the wheel with a drill bit that is slightly larger than the lag bolt.

    • 9). Measure 3 inches from the top of the 5-foot long 2-by-4. Mark the spot with a pencil. Use a drill to make a hole at the 3-inch mark with a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the lag bolt.

Add a washer on the lag bolt and slide the plastic arrowhead onto the lag bolt. Slide the lag bolt into the hole at the center of the wheel. Add a second washer behind the wheel.

Position the wheel on the 2-by-4 so the hole in the center of the wheel aligns with the hole at the 3-inch mark on the 2-by-4. Screw in the lag bolt loosely in the hole in the 2-by-4 so that the wheel can spin.

Insert the free end of the 2-by-4 in a large, deep and heavy terra cotta plant pot. Fill the pot with sand to create a heavy stand for the wheel. The wheel should stand straight if the pot is heavy enough to hold the wheel's weight.
