    Definition

    • Neodymium magnets are created from a combination of rare metals that have powerful magnetic properties. They are known for their strength, dependability and applications where strong magnets are needed but electromagnets are not practical. They are known under several names, including NIB magnets, neos, Neodymium-Iron-Boron or Nd-Fe-B magnets. The latter two monikers show the precise elements from which neodymium magnets are created.

    Properties

    • Neodymium magnets are the most powerful natural magnets known to science. They can hold and lift thousands of times their own weight through their magnetic bonds and are rated from N24 to N55 on the magnetic scale. Their precise properties depend on their shape and precise composition, but they are known for their ability to maintain magnetic capabilities even under conditions that would demagnetize other sources. When using neodymium magnets there are several things to take into consideration--they can corrode very easily, and commercial versions are usually coated with strong films that protect the metals. The magnets also can be very dangerous, especially the strong versions made for heavy duty work.

      Manufacturers produce neodymium by collecting various rare earth samples and then carefully sifting out the neodymium, which is turned into a powder and then combined with boron and iron, which give it even stability to be molded into a solid shape. Shapes vary from circles and blocks to the traditional horse-shoe design. These magnets can withstand cold temperatures, but very high temperatures can cause them to crack and fail.

    Industry Uses

    • Many magnetic filters and separators use neodymium magnets for to create their magnetic fields. Small versions of the magnets also are used to create components found in electrical storage devices such as hard drives. More durable models are created to help run generators, hold metal for welding purposes and find studs or nails.

    Medical Uses

    • Magnet therapists typically use small neodymium magnets in their treatments, which attempt to relieve pain and other symptoms by realigning the body's natural magnetic fields. Large neodymium magnets are popular as components of some MRI machines, which use magnetic fields to take scans of the body.

    Other Uses

    • Small neodymium magnets have uses in many items, from small toys to jewelry and placeholders. Many magnetic products made for convenience use neodymium magnets.
