- 1). Cut the 1-inch by 4-inch boards with any preferred saw. Two pieces will be 10 inches long, and two other pieces 8 inches long. Save the rest of the board for a different project. Use a hand saw and miter box or a miter saw to make 45-degree miter cuts on the ends of each board, so that when the boards are stood on edge, the corners will come together perfectly. This is the wall portion of the display case.
- 2). Use the wood glue and glue one corner together, and then hammer in two nails to keep it together. Wipe up any excess glue. Repeat this process for the other corners until all four are complete.
- 3). Lay the rectangle just made on top of the plywood. Trace around it, then remove the rectangle. Using a hand or circular saw, cut the plywood down to size. Sand the edges smooth. Place the rectangle on a work surface and lay a bead of wood glue on the top edge. Place the plywood on top, making sure all the edges line up. Use nails to completely secure, with two to three nails per side. Wipe off excess glue.
- 4). Stain or paint the outside and edges of the box. The inside is going to be lined, so painting or staining here is not necessary. If staining, match the color of the photo frame so it will look like a single unit. If painting, disassemble the photo frame, remove the glass and paint it also. Let dry completely.
- 5). Use scissors to cut a sheet of cork to fit the bottom of the box. Glue cork to bottom of the box with craft glue. This will give pins something to push into when displaying jewelry. Line the bottom and sides of the box with velvet. Cut one piece of velvet to cover the bottom and two sides of the box. Then cut separate pieces for the other two sides. Glue all the pieces into place, using a thin coat of fabric glue. Set aside to dry while working on the lid for the box.
- 6). Take the photo frame apart, if it was not done earlier.The glass goes back into the frame, and will need to be glued into place. Do this by running a thin bead of hot glue on the lip of the frame where the glass rests. Then lay the glass in place. The hot glue will dry and bond quickly.
- 7). Choose what side the hinges should be on. This is a personal preference, just make sure to install them so the box top will open in the desired manner. Use the hammer with the supplied nails to keep the hinges in place. Put a little dab of glue on the hinge sections that attach to the box lid. Carefully lift the lid, then tap in the remaining hinge nails. The box is now ready to be filled.
