How to Draw a Lion Eating a Deer
- 1). Find some images of a lion feeding from a carcass. Choose a relatively close shot of a lioness gnawing on the neck of her prey. Select one that includes enough of a semblance of the deer killed to add more realism. Arrange your drawing station in a well-lit area and place your main reference images beside you so that you can frequently check your progress.
- 2). Draw the outline of the large head of the lioness with her teeth embedded in the throat of the dead deer. Mark the position of the ears, the eyes and the nose of the lion. Include one front leg of the lion placed below the head on top of the carcass. Draw the outline of the deer head just above the area of the neck that the lion has in its mouth. Draw the ear, eye and snout of the deer.
- 3). Detail the neck that has been exposed by the feeding lion. Use irregular lines and careful shading to indicate the exposed bones and flesh. Study the reference image to draw this correctly. Draw the front paw of the lion so that it obscures the lower portion of the deer at the bottom of the drawing.
- 4). Create the full depth of the lion fur using layers of pencil strokes. Draw the wrinkled features of the lion's face and nose as it digs its teeth into the carcass. Leave the eyes closed to enhance this effect. Detail the inner and outer ears, the area on top of its head and the paws. Draw the detail of the toes and claws holding the deer in place.
- 5). Shade the darker areas of the drawing carefully. Use a small cloth to graduate dark into lighter areas. Keep doing this until the objects begin to have depth and shape. Add small details in the surrounding area such as a branch or rock and texture them accordingly.
- 6). Sharpen lines and add more highlights using the eraser to finish your drawing.
