Will Grass Seeds Grow in Clay?

104 28

    Significance

    • A soil test is useful when dealing with clay soil. It tells you how acidic it is and recommends steps to amend it. For example, hydrated lime will make the clay more alkaline. In general, Iowa State University Extension says, an application of lime should not exceed 50 lbs. per 1,000 square feet.

    Potential

    • It is possible to loosen clay soil and aerate it, making it more conducive to growing grass. A few inches of compost and sand worked into the soil will help grass seed germinate.

    Considerations

    • Grass seed has a better chance of growing in clay if you use a starter seed fertilizer. Keeping the seed moist but not wet will help it germinate faster. Clay will hold onto water longer than other soil types. Determining a need for water may require a touch test.
