Step-by-Step Instructions to Replace Casement Windows
- 1). Measure the window opening from inside the house with the old casement window still in place, using a tape measure. Measure the width and height of the entire opening, from the wall frame -- not from the inside of the window casing. Subtract 1/2 inch from the height and width measurements. Order your replacement window according to the adjusted measurements. Leave the old window in place until the new one arrives.
- 2). Remove the perimeter of trim from around the inside of the window opening, using your hammer and pry bar. Don't break the trim as you take it out. Extract the nails from the trim with the claw of your hammer. Set the trim aside.
- 3). Cut around the perimeter of the casing, through the screws that hold the casing in place in the wall frame, using a reciprocating saw outfitted with a metal-cutting blade. Pull out the whole window unit.
- 4). Stand the bottom of the new casement window on the bottom span of the window opening. Push the whole window unit into the opening. The trim around the exterior of the opening will prevent the window from falling through.
- 5). Set a level vertically on the inside of the window unit. Shim under the unit and along its sides until the level indicates the window is sitting straight. Insert screws in the holes located in the sides of the window. Drive the screws through the unit and into the window framing, using a screw gun.
- 6). Spray low-expanding insulation around the edges of the new casement window, filling the space between the unit and the wall. Let the insulation set according to the label instructions.
- 7). Reinstall the trim around the inside of the opening, using a finishing nail gun and finish nails. Apply a bead of caulk around the trim to seal it.
