How to Remove a Windows XP Search
- 1). Open the "Start" menu. When using the default Start menu style and view -- click "Control Panel," click "Network and Internet Connections," then click "Internet Options." When using the classic Start menu and view -- point to "Settings," click "Control Panel," then double-click "Internet Options."
- 2). Click "Delete" in the Browsing History section.
- 3). Make sure there is a check mark in the box next to "Form data," then click "Delete." When you delete your browser's form data, among other things, you delete the queries typed into your browser's search bar.
- 1). Launch your Windows Registry Editor. Click "Start," select "Run," type "regedit" in the field box, and click "OK." Alternatively, you could also open "My Computer" and navigate to "C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe."
- 2). Open the following registry key: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5603." All of the search terms entered in the "All or part of the file name" field box, when searching "For Files or Folders," are stored here. In the right-side window panel, right-click on the name value of the saved search term you want to remove and select "Delete" from the shortcut menu.
- 3). Navigate to the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5604" registry key. All of the search terms entered in the "A word or phrase in the file" field box, when searching "For Files or Folders," are stored here. In the right-side window panel, right-click on the name value of the saved search term you want to remove and select "Delete" from the shortcut menu.
- 4). Go to the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5647" registry key. All of the search terms entered when searching for printers, computers, or people, are saved here. In the right-side window panel, right-click on the name value of the saved search term you want to remove and select "Delete" from the shortcut menu.
- 5). Open the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5001" registry key. All of the search terms entered when searching "On the Internet" using Window Search Assistant are stored here. In the right-side window panel, right-click on the name value of the saved search term you want to remove and select "Delete" from the shortcut menu. Close the Registry Editor.
