The Installation of a Drywall Patch

    • 1). Mark out a square area around the damage, using a T-square and pencil. Make sure two opposite sides of the square are running along the centers of wall studs (you'll be able to assess the stud positions through the hole in the plaster). Use a jigsaw to cut out the marked square. Two edges of the square should have expose half-widths of studs running along them.

    • 2). Cut a drywall patch to the size of the square, subtracting 1/4 inch from each side. Cut it by scoring along the marked lines with a razor knife, then snapping it at the line.

    • 3). Hold the drywall patch in the space, with two sides sitting against the half-widths of the studs that you exposed earlier. Secure the patch by sinking drywall screws every few inches along the length of each stud, using a screw gun.

    • 4). Press drywall mesh tape over the perimeter of the patch where it meets the surrounding surface. Spread joint compound over the seams with a drywall knife. Get the compound flat and smooth. Let the compound dry for about four hours.

    • 5). Sand the compound lightly with the sanding pad, add another compound layer, and let it dry. Lightly sand it, then add a third layer.

    • 6). Sand the final layer of compound smooth. Repaint the area.
