How to Make a String Instrument Sound Softer
- 1). Determine the type of mute you need. If you need it to soften the sound of your instrument in a performance, buy an orchestral mute. If you need it during practice to avoid disturbing others, purchase a practice mute.
- 2). Set the stringed instrument down with the strings facing up.
- 3). Place the mute over the strings just below the bridge. Move it until its sits on the bridge.
- 4). Play the instrument as you normally would. You'll notice that the sound is softer thanks to the mute.
