How to Make a String Instrument Sound Softer

1). Determine the type of mute you need. If you need it to soften the sound of your instrument in a performance, buy an orchestral mute. If you need it during practice to avoid disturbing others, purchase a practice mute.
2). Set the stringed instrument down with the strings facing up.
3). Place the mute over the strings just below the bridge. Move it until its sits on the bridge.
4). Play the instrument as you normally would. You'll notice that the sound is softer thanks to the mute.
