Etiquette for the Wording of a Wedding Registry

    Store Mention

    • The wedding registry information should be limited to one or two lines. Guests do not need an elaborate description of the wedding gifts. The wording should also refrain from mentioning any sentimental or emotional words to motivate guests to purchase from the registry. For example, do not write "As Jim and Barbara just purchased their new home they would really appreciate items to fill the new house." A simple, "the bride and groom are registered at Macy's." is adequate and appropriate and provides guests with what they need to know to purchase a gift from a registry.

    Multiple Registries

    • Many couples now opt to register at a few different stores, as one store may not have all the items they need or want. Not every store may be accessible for every guest, especially for out of town guests, so providing a few options is helpful and acceptable. The list of registries should be kept to a few, however. A long list can be viewed as being pushy or overboard, therefore keeping it to under four locations is preferable. The wording of the information can still be confined to a simple sentence or two. For example, "The bride and groom are registered at Macy's, Home Depot and Bed, Bath and Beyond."

    Cash or Honeymoon Registries

    • In contrast to the courtships of the past, it is not uncommon for couples today to live together for months or years prior to getting married. Because of this fairly modern trend, couples may not be in need of the typical pots and pans gifts that were popular in the past. For this reason, many couples now opt for non-traditional registries where they instead request contributions to their honeymoons or monetary gifts. This can be a complicated sentiment to navigate, as you want to enable the guests to give you something you need, however, it can easily be perceived as rude or pushy if worded incorrectly. For best results, format the request into a short and light-hearted rhyme or poem. For example, "Although your presence is gift enough for us, we have a request if you feel a gift is a must. We already have pots and pans galore, and our cupboards are so full we can't fit any more. What would suit the bridal couple best, is a contribution to our budding family nest."

    Registry Website

    • If you have unique gift choice for your registry, such as contributions to a honeymoon, or if you simply want to opt for a more modern adaptation of the gift registry, creating a wedding website may be the solution for you. Here couples can dedicate an entire web page to their registry, providing additional details on gifts and registry locations. You can also provide links to online shopping for your wedding registry, which can be more convenient for guests. Include the website wedding registry information in the invitation. However, for those who are not computer literate you will need to still mention at least one location you are registered. For example, "The couple is registered at Macy's.
