The C4 refers to the fourth generation of Corvettes. This generation of the American great was made from 1984 to 1996. Made with three different transmissions over the years, the C4 offers options for any kind of driver, whether fuel conscious, conservative or in need of throwing gears. - The first transmission that was offered in the C4 Corvette was a 4+3 manual transmission. This transmission offered an overdrive for second, third and fourth gear, and was used in an effort to increase fuel economy. This transmission pushed out 290 foot-pounds of torque to the rear wheels.
- In 1989, Chevy got rid of the 4+3 transmission and replaced it with a regular four-speed. This transmission was linked to an automatic overdrive for first, second and third gear. It was used from 1989 until 1991. The four-speed manual delivered 335 to 350 foot-pounds of torque, depending on the model year.
- In 1992, Chevy brought out the big guns and decided to change transmissions in the C4 once again. The new transmission put in the C4 was a six-speed manual. The six-speed transmission delivered 340 to 350 foot-pounds of torque. This transmission paired with the LT-4 engine was known as the Grand Sport Package.
