Family Survival Course Review - Is It Enough?

Hi! Alex here, and recently I bought a really informative eBook online called the Family Survival Course. Do you worry about all the things that can go wrong in the world, and how they might affect your family if the worst should come to pass? I know I do. I wouldn't say I'm obsessive about it, but I value preparedness. My family relies on me to make smart decisions for them, and that's why I have been learning about survival. Moreover, a few years ago, we all received a stark lesson in how close disaster can be. Hurricane Katrina caused mass devastation. People went without food or shelter because they weren't prepared and the government was slow mobilizing resources.

I don't ever want that to happen to my family, and I'm sure you don't either.

What is the Family Survival Course eBook?

This eBook is authored by Jason Richards and contains 275 pages worth of material covering various aspects of survival - food, medicine, power, and more. I would say that this is largely an introductory manual. That was perfect for me, since I was more or less a beginner when I bought it. If you are looking for in-depth information on specific topics, there are more eBooks out there which will cover each of these aspects in greater detail. You have to start somewhere, though, and this overview will get you acquainted with everything you need to do to be ready for the worst.

You will learn about:
  • 44 foods which are vital to have around in a crisis, and which you can stock up in advance. You also get some healthy grocery shopping tips here that help you to find the best-quality foods - after all, you don't want to stock up on unhealthy foods in a crisis (or anytime). I thought I'd be ordering foods on the internet, but I was able to pick up almost everything in town, which was a pleasant surprise. I figured out a lot of the food I was buying was not the best too, so now we're eating better all around.
  • Also food related, you get to learn some basic gardening skills. This includes growing produce you can eat as well as medicinal herbs.
  • First aid medicine is something else you will learn about from this eBook. You'll find out what belongs in your first aid kit and how you can learn more about emergency medicine.
  • Hydration is another aspect of survival which is actually quite complicated, since you have to learn how to keep water clean and safe (more here ).
  • You'll also learn about energy. If the main energy grid were to go down, you might find yourself with heat, air conditioner, light, or other necessities. Learn all about backup power supplies and how to get one for yourself.
  • Basic self-defense is taught in this course too, so you can protect your home and your family with the smartest weapons and strategies.

More Breadth Than Depth

As you might imagine, there is more in the way of breadth here than depth, although there is a fair amount of that too. I was actually surprised by how much detail the author did manage to squeeze into this eBook considering its length and how many topics it covered. But while you are reading, you will almost certainly find yourself making a list of topics you want to learn more about. I would highly suggest that you have a notepad nearby where you can jot down subject areas to research further.

As an example, this eBook teaches you how to build several different type of backup power supplies. You could theoretically manage with nothing more than this eBook, but I wouldn't try unless it were a genuine emergency already. Frankly, I'd need a little more knowledge in the basic area of electrical engineering before I felt really confident tackling these projects. But I am interested in that, so I took notes about the power supply ideas and have put in some orders online for more in-depth books on those topics. You can watch the family survival video here.

But other things I already feel like I have a good handle on now, like the food supply in my basement, which is now much more comprehensive. I also started my own garden after I read the gardening section in the eBook, and got a pretty good start on it, though I can tell that is yet another area where I could benefit from more knowledge. So I am heading to the library to see what I can find.

Excellent Introduction for Beginners

If you have already read through an introductory course on survival, I don't think you will find anything new here. This product isn't being marketed toward advanced learners. It's a crash course designed for beginners who are just getting into it and don't yet have the broad overview of what they need to learn. You'll pick up a lot of skills while you are reading this eBook, but you will also form an understanding of what else you need to learn more about before you become an expert.

Part of that understanding is cultivating the right mindset for survival, and that was something the author really emphasized. I think that any survival plan's success or failure hinges largely on your approach. If you don't have the right mindset, you won't get anywhere. You have to learn how to be an optimist, and how to be flexible enough to adapt during a crisis.
