    National Scholarships

    • Several organizations offer nationally available scholarships for students seeking careers in any field of education. For example, the National Institute for Labor Relations offers the $1,000 Applegate/Jackson/Parks Future Teacher Scholarship to both undergraduate and graduate students planning to teach any subject. The organization Zeta Phi Beta offers scholarship assistance to education majors through the Isabel M. Herson Scholarship in Education, available to both undergraduate and graduate students in amounts of up to $1,000, as of 2011.

    Discipline-Specific Scholarships

    • Some national education scholarships are limited to students seeking to teach a specific subject. For example, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics offers scholarships of up to $10,000, as of 2011, to college sophomores planning to teach math at the high school level. The Journalism Education Association makes scholarship assistance available through Future Teacher Scholarships, valued at $1,000 as of 2011 and available to education majors who have aspirations to teach high school journalism. The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation offers support of up to $24,000 as of 2011 to graduate students planning to teach American History at the secondary level.

    State Scholarships

    • Some state governments offer scholarship support to students seeking education degrees. North Carolina offers several programs, including the Prospective Teacher Scholarship Loan. This provides up to $4,000 per year as of 2011 for undergraduate students seeking education degrees. A recipient is required to teach in North Carolina after graduating, or risks having to repay the loan. Illinois offers several programs to future teachers in that state, including the Minority Teachers of Illinois Scholarship Program, the Illinois Future Teacher Corps Program and the Illinois Special Education Teacher Tuition Waiver Program.

    School-Specific Scholarships

    • When conducting your scholarship search, don't overlook your college or university. Most schools that offer degrees in education also offer departmental scholarships limited specifically to education majors. For example, the College of Education at San Francisco State University offers numerous departmental scholarships varying in value from $500 to $5,000, as of 2011. Don't forget to apply throughout the year; many departments offer scholarships in both the spring and fall semesters.
