How to Use a Border Tile for a Backsplash
- 1). Use your tape measure, level and pencil to mark a border around the edge of the backsplash, making it as wide as the thickness of your border tile plus the width of the grout line that you want (1/8 to 1/4 inch is standard).
- 2). Lay masking tape or painter's tape around the outside of the border.
- 3). Use your putty knife to "butter'' the backs of your border tiles with tile adhesive. Set them in place in the border that you marked out, between the backsplash and the masking tape. Keep a consistent space between them. Cut the end pieces as necessary with your tile cutter. Let the tiles set for 24 hours.
- 4). Use your rubber spatula to apply your pre-mixed grout to the tile border, pressing it into the spaces between the tiles and wiping it off the tiles themselves.
- 5). Wipe all the tiles with a damp sponge. Pull off the masking tape, and let the grout dry for a few days.
