Fun Indoor Places for Teens in Akron, Ohio

    YMCA

    • The Young Men's Christian Association (akronymca.com), or YMCA, has locations throughout Akron, including Firestone Park, Lake Anna Community Center and University Park. Each YMCA branch provides summer camps for children; during summer camp, YMCA attendees have access to the YMCAs' fitness and swimming facilities. Akron's YMCA branches also facilitate youth sports leagues, including flag football, baseball, volleyball, soccer and martial arts. Children may also participate in the YMCA's cheerleading and dance programs. The oldest continually operating indoor pool in the city is at the Akron YMCA Building in downtown Akron; the building was completed in 1931.

    Theater

    • The Weathervane Playhouse (weathervaneplayhouse.com) provides theater summer camps for teenagers 13 to 18 years old. These camps occur from June through August. The Summer Stock camp only permits teenagers; this camp allows teenagers to act in a full-length play and perform scenes from modern and classical plays. Weathervane also offers a combat workshop for teenagers ages 15 to 18. Located in downtown Akron, the Akron Civic Theater (akroncivic.com) hosts rock concerts for teenagers during the summer. Teenagers interested in a career in theater may volunteer for Akron Civic Theatre; volunteer occupancies include usher and box office positions.

    Museum

    • The Akron Art Museum (akronartmuseum.org) provides tours for teenagers during the school year, including tours for youth groups and classroom field trips. For summer tours, the Akron Art Museum allows groups of teenagers to visit on Wednesdays and Fridays; up to 60 teenagers per group are permitted. Teenagers may also apply for internships at the Akron Art Museum; various internships include communications and development of special events at the museum. Akron is also home to the Invent Now Museum (invent.org), which houses the Art of Invention, a collection of artwork that derives from American inventions. Teenagers may tour this museum for free.

    Skating

    • G.S.F.E. Roller Skating Rink (gsfecade.com) on Market Street is open year-round. This roller skating rink allow teenagers to host birthday parties of at least 25 participants. On Saturday nights, G.S.F.E. also hosts a Teen Skate night, which allows teenagers to enter the rink for a discounted price. The Center Ice Sports Complex (centericesports.net) is in Canton, approximately 10 minutes from Akron. This indoor ice skating rink hosts a figure skating club and youth hockey games. During the summer, the center hosts four-day hockey camps for teenagers.
