How to Make a Kukui Necklace
- 1). Measure two 4-foot lengths of lei twine and place the two lengths of twine next to each other with the ends even.
- 2). Tie the twine together in a double knot approximately 5 inches from one end of the pieces of twine.
- 3). Thread the other ends of the twine through the lei needle and pull the tails of twine through the eye so you have two 5-inch-long tails of twine after the needle.
- 4). Insert the needle through the bottom hole of a Kukui nut, through the nut and out the top. Thread the Kukui nut along the twine until it reaches the knot. Tie a double knot just above the Kukui nut to hold it securely between the knots of twine.
- 5). Add another Kukui nut in the same fashion and push it down until it stops at the knot. Tie another double knot to surround this Kukui nut with knots.
- 6). Repeat Step 5 until the necklace is as long as desired. Make sure it is long enough to slip easily over the head and hangs down to approximately mid-chest. End with a double knot after the last Kukui nut. Tie the two ends of the necklace together in a tight double knot and trim any excess lei twine to finish the necklace.
