Meeting people can be an important life skill. Knowing how to socialize can be key in maintaining good mental and emotional health. People need the company of others to feel good. Without social supports, it is normal to feel isolated. Socializing can help reduce and prevent feelings of isolation as well as depression and it can even improve memory. Group socializing also increases a sense of belonging and can make people feel happier overall.

    Joining Social Activities

    • The key to meeting people is to create social opportunities. Connecting to others first involves getting away from isolating activities such as the computer or television. There are many activities that encourage socialization; activities where participants share a common interest are best. Volunteering at schools, churches, charities or other groups is a good way to meet people. Other possibilities for meeting new people include joining groups that revolve around a common interest, such as sports or other hobbies.

    Developing Conversation Skills

    • Conversation skills can help people to connect with others. Developing self-awareness in a conversation can go a long way. For instance, people with conversation skills find graceful ways to enter discussions and work to understand not just what others are saying, but also what they might be feeling. Understanding subtle social cues from others, such as body language, aids conversation as well. Good conversationalists stay with the general tone of the conversation and avoid blurting out inappropriate comments. When meeting people for the first time, gathering information such as what their interests are can be a good way to engage others and connect.

    Staying Positive

    • Fear of social rejection can keep many people from socializing. It is important to recognize the value of making these connections. People create lasting connections with people that they like and who are positive and upbeat. Those who are successful keep trying new ways to meet people. Approaching people with the expectation that they will respond positively is also a good technique for meeting and connecting with others.
