How to Use Up American Airlines Miles
Things You'll Need
Instructions
1Visit the American Airlines AAdvantage website or review your most recent statement and determine your current mileage balance. Then look at the award charts and options to determine what can be redeemed with the amount of miles you have.
2
If booking an airline award, you may do so via the airline's Web site or over the phone. Note that flights booked within 21 days of departure can carry a fee up to $100, and booking over the phone may incur an additional charge. Visit the "Making Award Reservations" page to get started. After making a reservation, print out your confirmation number and re-check your mileage balance to ensure the award has been redeemed for the proper amount of miles.
3
If redeeming miles for anything other than a plane ticket, visit the American Airlines non-air mileage redemption page. Miles can be used for gifts, such as flowers, vacation packages, newspaper and magazine subscriptions, or Admirals Club memberships. Redeem miles online, and print out a confirmation.
4
You may also "share" your miles with another AAdvantage member by transferring your miles to another account. This option carries a fee of $50 per 5,000 miles and a $30 transaction fee.
