How to Repair Formica Counters

    • 1). Spread laminate filler over the damaged area with a putty knife. Use a generous amount to make sure you get it into all cracks and crevices.

    • 2). Wipe the excess laminate filler using a damp sponge. The surface should be smooth.

    • 3). Give the laminate filler one to two hours to dry or as directed by the manufacturer's label. The filler will expand, so the smooth surface you had in Step 2 will be slightly raised now that it is dry.

    • 4). Smooth the surface with the sandpaper. Don't worry about the small abrasions you create; you will fix this in the next step.

    • 5). Spray the entire counter surface with top coat sealer. Some sealers are applied by painting. Follow the label for proper application. This covers abrasions, protects the top from moisture penetration and restores the counter to a new finish.
