    • 1). Secure the sub-panel to the wall. Make sure the sub-panel has 3 feet of clearance around all sides to keep with building codes.

    • 2). Run the sub-feed cable from the main electrical box to the sub-panel. Make sure the sub-feed cable is large enough to handle the max amperage available in the box. For example, a 6-3G cable can handle 50 amps.

    • 3). Strip 12 inches of jacket off the sub-feed cable with a pair of wire strippers.

    • 4). Install a 3/4-inch cable clamp to the bottom of the sub-panel and feed your sub feed cable into the box. Secure it in place with the clamp.

    • 5). Secure the red and black wire to separate lugs on the bus bar and then secure the bare wire to the neutral bus bar. Finally, connect the bare ground wire to the grounding bus bar.

    • 6). Turn off power to the main breaker. Trim approximately 12 inches of jacket off the sub-feed cable and then insert the sub-feed cable into the main breaker box.

    • 7). Secure the white wire to the neutral bus bar and then connect the ground wire to the grounding bus bar.

    • 8). Connect the black and red wire to a 50-amp breaker and snap the breaker into place. This allows you to turn off power to the sub-box and it protects the main electrical box in the event of a short connected to the new sub-box.
