Making Parade Puppet Dragons
- 1). Make a dragon head out of an old cardboard egg carton. Separate the top and bottom of the carton by cutting it along the hinge. Cut the top of the carton in half, creating two six by two egg containers. Discard one of these halves.
- 2). Cut the bottom of the carton into sections of two, four, and six eggs. Discard the four egg section. Paint eyes on the bottom of the two egg section. Lay this piece sideways on top of the six egg section at the cut edge, with the eyes facing toward the opposite end. Staple the piece onto the carton.
- 3). Place the bottom six egg section, as if reassembling the egg carton. Use duct tape to attach these pieces at the back, on the same side as the eyes. This will create a hinged jaw for the dragon.
- 4). Draw eyebrows and a beard for the dragon on colored poster board. Draw these features by sketching flame or leaf-shaped designs. Draw a flame or leaf shape approximately three inches long for each eye and five inches long for the beard. Cut out. Staple an eyebrow above each eye with the flames or points facing up. Staple the beard to the egg carton on the opposite side. Point the flames downward and staple it to the bottom jaw (six-egg carton).
- 5). Draw a snout for the dragon. On the top six-egg carton, directly above the beard when the jaw is closed, draw two quarter-size circles with a black marker. Color in these circles with the marker.
- 6). Create the dragon’s trunk, using either fabric or poster board, depending on your preferences. If using fabric, paint a pattern on the red fabric to resemble the scales of a dragon’s trunk. If using poster board, cut a 24- by 10-inch strip of board and accordion fold (fan fold) the strip to create ridges. Unfold the paper.
- 7). Create a tail. Sketch a flame or leaf shape with pointed flares facing in one direction on a piece of poster board that is approximately 10 inches long. Use markers or paint to make the tail colorful. Cut it out.
- 8). Attach the head, trunk and tail of the dragon. Staple the one end of the trunk (whether using fabric or folded poster board) to the end of the egg carton, on the hinged side. Staple the other end of the trunk to the tail.
- 9). Attach dowel rods to the tail and the head of the dragon. Glue or duct tape these rods to each end. Hold the rods to prop up the puppet.
