Piles: What are They?

Piles commonly known as hemorrhoids are a common ailment. According to scientific studies, women tend to be more prone in getting this ailment than men. The reason may not be clear yet. Piles are condition where the veins on the anus and rectum areas are inflamed and swollen. It appears to be bluish swellings that are due to the stagnated blood.

Hemorrhoids can be both internal and external. Internal hemorrhoids could not be seen nor felt unless they are severe. A discharge of dark blood happens. On the other hand, external hemorrhoids appear around the anus area and are visible. There is severe pain but not much bleeding though. In some worst cases, the veins suddenly burst out which results to bleeding piles.

Piles come in different sizes. From tiny ( about 5 mm in diameter ) to the size of a golf ball. These are illness that affects about 4% of the US population. These are common in adults that aged between 45-65 years old. However, these can occur in teenagers, young adults and even children.

The most common symptom of hemorrhoids is the occurrence of red blood on your feces or on the toilet paper. However, you may also notice itching around the anal canal and pain during bowel movement and sitting. Mucus may even come out of the anus.

Experts said that they are not really sure what is the exact cause or causes of piles but they have seen a lot of different factors. Example of these are sitting and standing over a long period of time, drinking very little amount of liquids, doing little exercise, overweight, pregnancy ( for women ), eating little amount of fiber, straining during bowel movement and lifting heavy weights.

The best and effective ways to prevent piles is drinking plenty of water and eating foods that are rich in fiber, avoiding straining during bowel movement and lifting objects and staying active daily.

Hemorrhoid treatment is most effective if and only the condition is determined earlier. However, if the condition remains untreated for a long period of time, this will only worsen it. Always take necessary actions during the early stages.

Some pile treatment options are creams, surgery and natural cures. Creams are proven to be really effective to reduce swelling. However, this does not guarantee a lasting cure to hemorrhoids. They may work along with a natural cure and pain relief.

Natural cures are really effective to fight the root problems of hemorrhoids. Herbal remedies have become popular nowadays since many doctors around the world recommend herbal remedies as a hemorrhoid treatment. These natural cures work fast. They do not only cure hemorrhoids but help relieve the irritation and pain as well.

Another means of treating hemorrhoids is surgery. This can really be effective but requires a lot of money. This also requires the patient a long recovery time. Some methods of surgery like hemorrhoidectomy can be quite painful and requires a long recovery time for about four weeks or more.
