The best time to visit Sydney

Unlike many destinations that can be less appealing in 'low' seasons, Sydney suffers from no such handicap. The city enjoys sunshine for an average 340 days each year, and even if you're visiting at the height of winter - that's July and August, for those travelling from the northern hemisphere - you can still expect fair temperatures of around 15 degrees Celsius, with no snowfall in sight.

If you're heading to Sydney for its famous beaches and to soak up the sun, the height of summer is the best time to go, with temperatures around 26 degrees meaning the heat won't usually be overbearing. Then again, the cooler but no less enjoyable spring and summer can be ideal if you're looking to escape the crowds and enjoy some of Sydney's top family attractions, such as Sydney Zoo, without the bustle.

Even with a climate that's favourable all year round, you may still find reasons to visit Sydney at particular times of the calendar, especially if you're heading there to take part in one of its world-famous festivals. Sydney is one of the world's liveliest party cities, and the year kicks off as it means to go on with the Sydney Festival in January, featuring open air performances of music and theatre in the height of the Australian summer.

February brings even more colour to the Sydney calendar with the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras event, the world's biggest celebration of the LGBT lifestyle characterised by its all-night parties and the iconic parade down Oxford Street. Even if your tastes are a little more restrained, you could find a wealth of events that are right up your street, from Tropfest - the world's biggest festival of short films - to the Sydney Writers' Festival in May, putting to rest the myth that Sydney is only a city for sun seekers and beach bums.

Don't forget New Year either, which is celebrated with much gusto around the area of Sydney Harbour and is commonly viewed as one of the most entertaining places in the world to see in the new calendar. If you're planning to visit Sydney over a festival period, or at the height of the summer season, it's always advisable to book your travel and accommodation well ahead of time, especially if you're keen to get the best rates on a luxury hotel Sydney before others beat you to it.
