The Rise of Bingo as we know it
16th century - As mentioned above the original form of bingo was invented in the 16th century, the same century which gave England Shakespeare, however it was Italy who claimed Bingo, or 'Lo Giuoco del Lotto D'Italia' as it was named then. A state run lottery game funded the country's coffers.
1770's - it travelled through Europe through this time, reaching France where it was played by wealthy Frenchmen, the 'Le Lotto' was the name given by the French.
1800's - The game spread to Germany, again the game was incorporated in a different manor, this time it was used as an educational tool in schools for math, spelling and history.
1929 - The most recognisable form of bingo at this stage was developed when it reached the states. North America was the location and punters chose to call it 'Beano' soon abbreviated to 'Bean-go', this was because players marked of numbers on their cards using beans!
American businessman Edwin Lowe re-named the game 'Bingo' after he heard a player calling out "Bingo" instead of Beano… to think people where laughing at that man for saying bingo! That same businessman noticed the possible value of the game and soon hired mathematician Carl Leffler to devise the biggest ever bingo game. Leffler devised 6000 gaming cards by 1930, it is believed Leffler went insane because of his efforts.
A priest proposed to Lowe that bingo should be used to raise church funds, and by 1934 around 10,000 bingo games were taking place on a weekly basis.
The 60's was the breakthrough year for the UK, due to the growth in TV population cinemas and theatres were closing down, many of these run down building were used for Bingo.
Between the 60's and 80's bingo just kept on growing and growing in popularity in the UK more and more people were turning up each week and people generally enjoyed it. The 80's saw the recognition of bingo rise as buildings were made purposely for bingo.
Although 1996 was possibly the pinnacle in bingo history thus far, this was the year of the first ever online bingo site.
