Google launches useful new tool for SEO marketers
Google Trends enabled SEO marketers to check how popular particular search terms were over time, and region by region by region. It also offered a rather nifty feature that displayed online news articles relevant to the search terms. This proved particularly useful for the industry in enabling SEO experts to analyse the mindset and habits of web users.
Google Correlate
Now Google has released a new tool – Google Correlate. Though currently functional, Correlate is still in the beta stages of development and can as yet only analyse search data for the United States. But it has exciting potential.
According to Google, "Google Correlate is like Google Trends in reverse. With Google Trends, you type in a query and get back a data series of activity (over time or in each US state). With Google Correlate, you enter a data series (the target) and get back a list of queries whose data series follows a similar pattern."
For example if you were performing SEO for a company that sold fishing supplies and typed in 'fishing rods' into Google Correlate, you would be shown a number of search terms which have similar user search patterns. In this case, fishing lures, reels, marine radios and boat accessories are listed amongst others, so you might then decide to optimise some landing pages for these key phrases as well.
You can also view the correlated data over time in handy line graph form. In the case of our fishing supplies store you would see, perhaps predictably, that demand for these search terms peak during the summer months each year. With this knowledge you could then aim to launch a major marketing blitz just before the summer rush.
Finally, you can also view the results proportionally on a map of the United States to discover what geographical areas are searching for those terms the most. Clearly for UK marketers this is of limited use currently, but when Correlate goes global it will be yet another useful, and free, tool from our friends at Google.
