While they can be located in various areas of the back, they are commonly located in the lumbar region. When the injured spinal disc is located in the lower part of the back, pain can radiate throughout the lower body and limbs. The pain can be severe and sharp, and may worsen with movement. Limited range of motion may also be experienced.

Treatment can range from rest, heating pad, exercise and medication. Physical therapy or chiropractic procedures may also be beneficial treatment. In a certain percentage of cases, surgery may be necessary. The majority who suffer with this condition will be able to return to normal activity with treatment.
