Though dollar coins have long been something of a novelty in the United States, the Presidential Dollar Coin Act of 2005 has brought dollar coins into wide circulation with the planned minting of commemorative coins honoring all the late presidents of the country. As of October, 2010, 15 coins have been minted and put into circulation within this series. - The first mintings of the presidential dollar coin series include one coin each for the first four presidents of the United States: George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. They were released (respectively) in February, May, August and November of the year.
- In 2008, the next four presidential dollar coins were released in accordance with the consecutive order of presidential history. The coins feature the likenesses of James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, and Martin Van Buren. The coins were released in the same respective months of 2008 as the coins of 2007.
- Following the same schedule of releases, the coins of presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk, and Zachary Tyler were released to the public.
- The 2010 presidential coins include Millar Fillmore, Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan. The scheduled release date for the Abraham Lincoln coin is in November.
- As of October, 2010, the remaining commemorative coins of all deceased presidents are scheduled to be released, four at a time, in the same yearly schedule as the already released coins. There are no plans to release coins featuring still living presidents, as the coins are memorial commemorations.
