How to Prepare Yourself for the First Yoga Class

If you are looking for a fitness regimen that doesn't involve intense exercise, doing yoga might be a great alternative for you. Except for a mat, yoga requires no equipment. It is easy to learn and soothing for the soul. Yoga originated in India and literally means to unite one's spirit, mind and body. It is not only about exercise but also training your mind and body. Yoga is a lifestyle practice.

You may have learned about yoga from watching morning shows or heard about it in celebrity features. Before you go ahead and enroll yourself for a series of yoga sessions, you must prepare yourself for your first yoga class.

Find the right yoga outfit

Exercise clothes have become fashionable in the gym over the years. Many popular brands cater to the growing market of apparel for health and fitness buffs. For your first yoga class, wear something comfortable. If you don't want to spend any money on a new outfit, just wear stretchable shorts and a shirt. If you are looking for a whole new workout wardrobe, you need to find clothes specifically made for yoga. Yoga pants are popular among yoga enthusiasts because of the breathable and flexible fabric. Find something that is not too tight on your legs and midsection. Avoid spandex since the material will just restrict your movements.

Yoga pants made of cotton and lycra are highly recommended in apparel shops. Don't wear jeans or denim shorts to yoga class. You will not be able to bend and twist properly because of the coarse materials of your outfit.

Buy a yoga mat

Most gyms provide yoga mats to first-time students. However, you will be advised to bring your own in the succeeding classes. You need a yoga mat to practice movements that require you to lie down on your back.

Don't come to class on an empty stomach

It is not advisable to perform positions without proper nourishment. You will need energy to practice yoga. If you just had a heavy meal, wait for at least 3 hours to pass to go to class. For light snacks, you will only have to wait for at least an hour or two to get started. Drink as much water as you can before a yoga session to keep you hydrated.

Warm up
In yoga, you must be aware of your breathing and body. Just relax and concentrate on your breathing. The energy you normally use give out as you live your daily routine should be pushed inward to nurture your mind and body. You will be taught the basic postures in yoga. If you feel any kind of strain on your body during practice, you have to stop and curl your body like a child. Concentrate on relaxing your body.

As a beginner, you are not expected to perfect all the yoga movements and positions. You will get used to the routine once your body gets used to twisting and stretching. You are encouraged to feel for yourself what movements work and what doesn't. Adjust your practice according to how you feel.
