    • 1). Look at photos of Medieval Paternoster beads and decide what colors you want to use to make yours. Choose the beads and other embellishments that you want to use. Decide on the number of beads that you want to use. Ordinarily, 50 beads are used.

    • 2). Decide what style of Paternoster you want to make. There are many variations of Paternoster beads. They can be made in circular form or a single, straight strand. Gather your beads and embellishments together and set them aside in a small dish.

    • 3). Measure strong beading thread to the length you desire, adding 8 inches to facilitate tying the ends when you're done. Cut the thread to this length. Press the thread between your thumb and a piece of beeswax. Draw the length of the thread along the beeswax to coat it. The beeswax will make it stronger, easier to manipulate and protect it from water damage.

    • 4). String the thread onto a needle that will fit the holes in your beads. Tie a knot at the opposite end to keep the beads on the string as you add them.

    • 5). Push the needle through the beads, one by one, and down onto the thread. Add smaller (filler) beads and embellishments as desired to make a pleasing design.

    • 6). Remove the needle and hold one end of the necklace in each hand. Shake the necklace very gently to allow the beads to "settle" onto the thread. Tie a large knot at both ends for a straight strand Paternoster or tie the two ends together for a round Paternoster. Secure the knots by dabbing them with clear nail polish.
