    • 1). Remove old or loosened paint from the car. Use a sharp razor scraper or putty knife to remove all paint from the area you wish to re-coat. You should be able to see bare metal.

    • 2). Sand the entire exposed metal surface with medium grit or fine grit sandpaper to remove any residual old paint. Wipe down the area with a tack cloth to remove sanding dust.

    • 3). Mask off windows, mirrors, lights and any area that you do not wish to paint. Cover these areas with masking tape and newspaper to protect them.

    • 4). Ventilate your work area and wear a protective respirator and gloves when working with paint. The paint and clear coat of these products will produce strong and potentially dangerous fumes.

    • 5). Mix two parts base coat paint to one part reducer, unless otherwise instructed by your specific product. Some paint products may require different mixture levels.

    • 6). Pour your paint mix into your chosen paint sprayer. Set the sprayer to 27 pounds per square inch (PSI) or pressure. Hold the sprayer at least 6 inches away from your body and spray the base coat onto the car's surface in smooth, even layers, covering all exposed metal. Be sure to overlap your strokes by about 75 percent to avoid seams.

    • 7). Allow the base coat to dry per paint product instructions and apply a second coat, if necessary. While your final coat of base dries, clean out your paint sprayer and dry it thoroughly to remove all base coat color.

    • 8). Rub down the dry base coat with tack cloth to remove any dirt and dust that collected on the surface during drying. These particles can leave bumps in your clear coat finish.

    • 9). Mix four parts clear varnish and one part hardener and load the mix into the paint sprayer. Apply the clear coat with the same even, smooth passes as the base coat. Allow the first coat to dry for 15 minutes and apply a second, followed by another 15 minutes and a third coat. No sanding is required between coats.
