How to Make a Rail Quilt
- 1). Cut three different fabrics into 2 1/2-inch wide strips. Choose three fabrics that coordinate with each other. You must have one dark, one light and one medium toned fabric.
- 2). Cut all the strips into 6 1/2-inch long patches. The number of strips you need depends on the size of your desired quilt. Each block uses three patches and measures 6 inches square.
- 3). Place a light fabric patch and a medium fabric patch together with the right, or more colorful, sides together. Pin along one long edge. Stitch this pinned edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
- 4). Open up the sewn pair of fabric patches. Lay a dark patch on top of the medium patch with the right sides together. Pin the free long edges together. Sew this edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. You now have a 6-inch block made of three stripes.
- 5). Make more blocks in the same exact manner until you have enough for your quilt top.
- 6). Lay the blocks out on a large table, bed or other large surface. Experiment with placing the blocks in different directions, with the dark stripe at the top, bottom or side. Lay out a combination of blocks, then step back and look at the total design from farther away. Squint your eyes to help see the major design elements. Go back and rearrange the blocks again. Keep playing with the blocks until you find a pleasing design.
- 7). Sew the blocks together into rows and the rows into a quilt top, keeping the design pattern intact.
