    • 1). Visit your local courthouse and inquire about any permits or fees you must pay when removing a tree. Each city will have its own specific set of regulations.

    • 2). Decide which direction you will fell your tree. You want the tree to fall in an area where there are no structures such as buildings, homes, fences or power lines. This may be difficult in an urban environment and special care must be taken not to cause harm or damage.

    • 3). Plan your escape path. The escape path is the path you take to quickly move away from the tree after you make the last cut into the trunk. Your escape path must be free of obstructions.

    • 4). Check the chainsaw. Make sure the blade is sharp and you have plenty of fuel in the chainsaw. Wear a pair of safety goggles to protect your eyes.

    • 5). Make the undercut into the tree trunk. The undercut is a 45-degree notch that is ¼ of the diameter of the trunk. You must make the undercut on the side of the tree that is pointing in the direction you are planning the tree to fall.

    • 6). Create a backcut into the trunk. The backcut is made 2 in. higher than the undercut on the opposite side of the undercut. When making the backcut, do not cut through to the undercut. Doing so will cause the tree to fall in an unpredictable manner.

    • 7). Shut the chainsaw off and safely walk away from the tree using the escape path that you previously created. Wait until the tree falls on its own.

    • 8). Clear away the fallen tree and branches.
