    Male Breast Reduction

    • Males can have a form of weight loss surgery specifically for breast reduction. Men can suffer from gynaecomastia, a condition that raises the amount of glandular tissue, which leads to an increase in breast size. Liposuction is performed to eliminate fatty tissue. The procedure can take up to three hours to perform, states Cosmetic Surgery Consultants.

    Celebrities

    • Plenty of celebrities have undergone weight loss surgery. The list of stars includes Al Roker from NBC's Today show, actress Roseanne Barr, author Anne Rice, soccer player Diego Maradona, American Idol judge Randy Jackson, musician Carnie Wilson and TV personality Sharon Osbourne.

    Women and Pregnancy

    • Women who undergo weight loss surgery can get pregnant, but should wait at least a year and a half before having a baby, states the BabyCenter website. A woman's body undergoes tremendous changes after the surgery, including disruption of the body's nutrition needs, which can result into health risks for a newborn. Women who have weight loss surgery are also more likely to give birth through a c-section rather than through a vaginal delivery.

    Gastric Bypass

    • The most commonly performed weight loss surgery is Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Almost 80 percent of weight loss surgery is this type of procedure, states WebMD. This type of surgery involves cutting the stomach into two sections, a large piece and a much smaller pouch. After the surgery, food forgoes a section of the small intestine, leading to the reduction of calorie intake. According to weightlosshelp.com, this gastric bypass surgery takes two hours to complete and takes about three months to heal. The average weight loss results in a 70 percent weight loss after 12 months and 60 percent after five years.

    Risks/Complications

    • No surgery is foolproof. Risks and complications are associated with any procedure including weight loss surgery. Complications include internal bleeding and hernias. The Cosmetic Surgery Consultants report that there is a 1 percent chance for blood clotting to develop in the legs after the operation and up to 20 percent of cases result in an abdominal hernia, mostly caused by throwing up or straining after the operation. The chances of dying from weight loss surgery complication is slim. WebMD states that fewer than 1 in 200 people die due to problems from the operation with the first four weeks.
